Do you know what an electrostatic field is?

Time:2025-12-22

An electrostatic field is an electric field excited by stationary charges, so an electrostatic field is an active field.
For a closed surface, the difference between the number of electric field lines passing through the surface and the number passing through it is directly proportional to the algebraic sum of the charges and quantities contained within the surface. This is the well-known Gauss's theorem concerning electrostatic fields.
In addition, the electrostatic field is a conserved force field. That is, when a point charge is moved from one place to another through different paths in the electrostatic field, the work done by the electrostatic field force on the charge is exactly the same. This is another theorem about the electrostatic field - the loop theorem. This property of the electrostatic field is similar to the gravitational field that is very familiar to everyone. Therefore, we can also introduce potential difference into the electrostatic field to describe the work done by the electric field force on a unit positive charge when it is moved from one point to another. When the charge distribution of a charged system is in a finite space, we can take the potential at infinity as zero. In this way, the potential at each point in the electrostatic field will have definite values.
Furthermore, the characteristic of the electric field lines that vividly describe the electrostatic field is that they are emitted by positive charges (or at infinity) and terminate at negative charges (or at infinity). Electric field lines do not break where there is no charge. The electric potential at each point on the electric field line continuously decreases along the direction of the electric field line.
